Boys pulled from burning minivan

BREA – A father and two sons were helped out of their minivan by a Good Samaritan after their vehicle burst into flames on the northbound lanes of the 57 freeway Thursday morning, officials said.

The fire appears to have started when the driver of the minivan hit a piece of equipment that fell from a big-rig, said California Highway Patrol officer T. Gomez. The driver was unable to avoid the object and the vehicle burst into flames almost immediately, the driver told the CHP.

Commuters reported the fire just after 7 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the 57, said CHP officer Gabe Montoya. The driver was able to steer the car to the right shoulder of the freeway.

Another driver pulled over on the right shoulder and helped the father take out his two boys, ages 8 and 9, from the vehicle, which continued to burn on the side of the road, Gomez said.

The driver of the minivan was identified as Nick Tang of Yorba Linda, Gomez said.

The two boys were pulled out of the vehicle without any injuries, officials said.

The right lane of the freeway remained blocked until 8 a.m. until the Brea Fire Department was able to put out the flames.
